Almost exactly 20 years ago (did I really just type that?) Hubby and I attended a Mystery Dinner party. We had been married a little more than 6 months and most of our friends were still single. It was a date party and we were invited to play the role of the Butler and the Maid. This is the only photo I have of the event and it is a very dark, blurry, and grainy picture. I also cropped it back in my chop-up-all-the-photos-I-own days and I wish I hadn’t done that. I am glad that I have some sort of remnant of the photograph though because my husband can’t remember this evening at all. I can’t really blame him too much since I’ve been guilty of forgetting an entire vacation before – lol!
I don’t have a vivid memory of the party, but I do remember that my husband ended up being the person “whodunnit” in the game because I thought it was so cliché that the Butler really did do it. I also remember going to a costume store by my work to pick up a very inexpensive maid costume that just consisted of a child-size apron and a few frilly pieces. We were on a newlywed budget though, so I was pretty proud of myself for pairing this kit with an old black t-shirt and a short skirt to create my costume. I really can’t remember who hosted the party or where it was at. It’s funny how you think you will remember those things, but there just isn’t room to keep all of that in the brain. It was a fun evening and I’m pretty sure that a few of the girls were the ones who created the mystery and wrote out all the parts.
Fast forward to 2011…
This picture was taken by my daughter while we were on vacation a few weeks ago. My son celebrated his 18th Birthday while we were in Yellowstone and he wanted to have a murder mystery dinner party with the whole family. He’s dreamed about this for a few years now and he was thrilled that we were finally able to pull it off. It’s not a great picture of the two of us, but it’s fun to have the memory recorded. It was a 60’s themed party and my hubby was a Beatnik poet. I was the cook both in character and also literally, which is why I look a little sweaty and worn out.
We ordered the mystery from host-party.com which was nice because I didn’t have to do much to prepare. Alex and I did not read through the entire script so we were also surprised at who the “murderer” was. This is the game we used and it was a lot of fun! It’s funny how the changes in technology over the past 20 years had an impact on how the party was planned and carried out. When it all came down to it though, it was a lot the same – just a bunch of people having fun together!
What great memories to think about on a Memory Monday!
