I love these spice collections that show up every December at Target. They look like test tubes and they are so fun!
The one in the package is from this year. I bought it a few weeks ago. I noticed that the tubes have gotten a little bigger this year. The other set (on the right) is one I purchased in 2006. I figured the spices were getting a little stale. I know you are supposed to change spices like every 6 months according to Martha Stewart, but I've been known to keep mine for years and years. I figured this was a good excuse to tackle a fun little project I've had in mind. A totally impractical project. I wanted a sprinkle rack instead of a spice rack! I've been collecting fun sprinkles over the past year since I'm raising my own little Bakerella. Yes, my daughter adores Bakerella and she reads her blog regularly.
I decided to empty the old ones. Most were close to full so hubby asked why on earth would I need new ones when I hadn't used the old ones? I pulled out the Martha Stewart logic. I don't think it convinced him though. Then I admitted that the main reason I was doing this is because it would be easier than tracking down a set of test tubes with lids and a rack for my sprinkles. Again, I think my logic was lost on him. I'm sure he was wondering why we need to have anything in test tubes. I have no good answer for that one except for the fact that it is fun!
I soaked and scrubbed these tubes. The chili powder one might still smell a bit funny, but everything else was easy to clean. So I stored red hots in the chili powder container and I figure that is ok. Then I turned this collection
into this sweet little display of sprinkly fun.
Now I just need to figure out how to use up all the spices I bought this year so I can buy another set next year and fill the old tubes up with something fun!
P.S. These are only a seasonal item at Target so look for them in the area where they sell Christmas foods and gifts.
